Over the past month we have featured 125 artists and their artwork. I find this extraordinarily helpful: we live in a mad world, but for those of us who believe in some human values, it is terribly important that we just keep this little fire burning. It is about trusting your judgement, and the power of love. Photography is a wonderful prism for curiosity. For me, making photographs is saying (without ’saying’) ‘what is that thing, can I stare at it?’ - I think this is a perfectly suitable definition of photography, a long good stare. And it is something I believe we all do. What evolutionary trait would be useful if we turned away instantly to something shocking and dramatic, or romantic and whimsical happening right before us? Following through with what or who you are staring at, photography can be a ticket to meet so many intriguing people. I hope photography will be a benign tool for a society to understand ourselves and others better. My first thought of what an ingredient for a healthy life looked like was happiness. Photographs that present a shared enjoyment with the subject/person within (I certainly enjoyed making it), could help photography slowly return to being something made always in a partnership - the photographer and the rest of society in front of them.

henrykenyonphotography.com

Chiara Cavarzan

Collect Connecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14474225857860551968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5379637926793768378.post-18017230467820353482020-05-28T00:42:00.002-07:002020-05-28T00:42:41.214-07:00Carole Loeffler, Ann Froggatt, Amna Walayat and Constanza Sofia Miranda - Art of Caring 2020Welcome to the Art of Caring 2020. I am not a nurse, in the traditional sense, but a ""carer"" and nurturer of the people around me. The lineage and role of caretaker run within me. I get great satisfaction and enjoyment in taking care of the people in my life. It important that whatever people may face, that they feel loved, cared for, and comforted. This is central to who I am and what I want my art to do.

Most recently, in this pandemic, caring for one another has become even more important than ever. I have been cared for and helped by my family – the resilient nature of my children and my husband's sense of optimism and humor have brought me through some of my darkest hours. I am lucky to be part of a community of artists, colleagues, friends and students who help to uplift and care for each other. "In 2018 I was admitted to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon following a severe bleed. I was moved by the kindness and professionalism of all those who cared for me - from paramedics, nurses and doctors to healthcare assistants, porters and cleaners. My work is a small tribute to all of them: thank you."
My artwork focuses on people and the places where we live and work. I split my time between painting, drawing and printmaking. When not in the studio, I take my sketchbook out and jot down anything that I spot of interest on my travels: gestures, movement, how people interact."
Martin Hill is an artist based in Dundee, Scotland, predominantly specialising in expressive oil painting. He studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, and based on the success of his degree show he was selected and shortlisted for a multitude of 'Best Of' graduate exhibitions, including the Royal Scottish Academy's 'New Contemporaries'. He was also awarded the 2009 Barns-Graham Travel Award which facilitated a journey to Greece, a country which has inspired and informed a great deal of his work. Following the aforementioned award, he was invited to participate in the 184th RSA Annual Exhibition in 2010. Regularly exhibiting across the country, he has enjoyed several successful solo shows, notably at The Sutton Gallery, Edinburgh, and Roger Billcliffe Gallery, Glasgow. He also has work in the private collections of the University of Dundee and the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture. Proclaimed as “One of Scotland’s most exciting young painters” (-Artmag -May/June 2014), Hill’s paintings are characterised by expressive handling and lively brushwork. Bestriding genres and subjects, and with conscious nods to art history, “his work has been described as expressive and distinctive, drawing on both landscape and figurative traditions.” (-informededinburgh.co.uk -June 2014), while similarly being termed “expressive and poetic” (-galleries.co.uk -30-05-14).
Lucy is a multi-disciplinary artist, based in London. Her practice addresses both social and personal subject matters, creating work that responds to specific contexts, environments, and situations, focusing heavily on the human body and waste material. Lucy explores scenarios around the perceptions and preconceptions related to the body. Drawing in on her own anxieties and experiences. testing the boundaries of comfort and discomfort. Using her own body as a drawing tool to focus on 'problem areas’ which she goes on to translate through various mediums; print, sculpture and video.
The strand of her practice involving waste material stems from her fascination of how one can manipulate these discarded materials, to have new identities, altering their aesthetic and function. This interest of waste material's qualities and functions is how she came to develop her own unique printing and joining method involving aluminium cans and plastic packaging. The images she prints are often formed from a visual abstract dairy of her journeys. Lucy often fuses traditional techniques with modern technologies, her method of physical and digital collage acts as a starting point informing her work when creating larger paintings and prints.
"Art of Caring & Art for Caring - Human Rights are UNIVERSAL Essentials.
Covid-19 pandemic causes a horrible and unforgettable crisis worldwide:
uncertainty, instability, fear and anger, pain and losses and even lack of humanity.
'Ingredients for a healthy life' are much more important during stressful times like Care & Caring too. Professionals are forced to fight at the so called frontlines to save lives. Nevertheless, we are all responsible and should think and care more about Care & Caring for each other. A healthy, happy & creative way of living will enrich our life and future.
I hope you will all enjoy ""Art of Caring"".
It is a great pleasure to be part of the event. Maybe the exhibition will be an inspiration too.
Peacefully."
I am a textile based artist in the North East of England working with natural and sustainable materials. I also work a lot with hand embroidery, mainly to create pet portraits. My work aims to highlight the importance of both our natural environment and animals. When I’m not creating, I work as a Learning Support Assistant for college students with SEND, and I’m completing studies with the aim of becoming an Art Therapist.
Through different mediums, including collage, I explore the relationship between people in society.
Sex, gender, mental health issues and identity are part of people’s everyday life but not always accepted or understood in their broad possibility of existence.
How much do we truly know about people around us, what’s going on their private existences behind closed doors? How different we can be on the outside; from what society allows us to freely be?
Throughout life, and while memories shape our identity, we all thrive to change misconceptions of our own self; projecting freedom and fairness all across the human race without judgements or fears
What a difference it would make if identity wasn’t a mere way of acceptance, filtered and observed under a magnifying glass by society, but a way to fully express and complement with acceptance of natural human nature
I resource all my materials in a recycling way from charity shops to flea markets and street finds; looking for past lives to shine through and help me create and show my vision.
The vision I have is about all of us.
"Before I embarked on a career in art, I was a trained nurse for 25 years. I worked in psychiatry for a large part of that time, however I left nursing in order to have and bring up my son. I eventually returned to education, and I completed a degree in Applied Arts from the University of Hertfordshire specialising in Textile. It has taken me a few years to establish myself as a textile artist, and in those years I have tried to perfect my work and the techniques that I use. I currently exhibit my work both in the UK and internationally, and alongside producing art. Portraiture in I have always been fascinated by textiles as they provide a versatile medium through which I can create realistic images, and in my own art I set out to use fabric instead of paint to create a portraits. I love the colour and the texture of textiles and the endless possibilities for manipulation which they offer."
Exploring art making as a methodology that suggests the human condition is more complex then it is currently understood, Alexandria (Ally) Zlatar examines, instigates and provokes notions of the individual experience through specifically focusing on philosophical discourse, body image, embodiment, animals & ethics. Zlatar acknowledges there is power within the un-well body and believes there is tremendous value potency through examining these subjects through the contemporary art lens. Born in Mississauga, Canada. she holds a BFA in Visual Art & Art History from Queen's University & an MLitt Curatorial Practice from the Glasgow School of Art. Currently, she is pursuing her Doctorate of Creative Arts with the University of Southern Queensland. She has been involved in many exhibition creations & has had personal work shown globally. Additionally, she has worked on many curation projects with such galleries as Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Hunterian Art Gallery & Glasgow's Centre for Contemporary Art.
Through a process driven practice, I explore the instabilities that surround the term “nature.” What is nature? What does it mean for something to be natural? In a society reliant on single use products, and non-biodegradable materials, in light of this to what extent is our current “nature” natural. The once successful co-existence in the beginning of the Holocene, often referred to as the hunter-gatherer period, has seemingly become disproportionate, and humans have encroached upon nature. Unbalancing what is natural in the process. This illusion of a non-definitive line between humans and nature is questioned within my work.
During the current situation we find ourselves in nature plays a key role to our mental wellbeing. Confined to our homes, being able to leave the house and walk in the open creates some kind of normality and freeness to this strange situation.
"I would not call myself an artist as such, but I have always enjoyed making clothes and knitting – usually to patterns of my own invention. When I was a student, I found I had a facility for anatomical drawing.
I was captivated by the idea of entering something to the Art of Caring 2020, and this knitted panel of a haiku I wrote on the theme of ‘Ingredients for a Healthy Life’ is my first entry to any art exhibition.
After a lifetime of working for and within the Health Service I feel that I and my family have been, and still am, indeed fortunate to have benefited on so many occasions from the companionship, camaraderie, wisdom and dedication that is so willingly given by all members of the nursing and care staff."
This artwork was created by adult family carers who attend Suffolk Artlink's Around the Table carer groups in Halesworth, Lowestoft and Claydon. The three groups of carers collaborated to create assemblages of 'scraped into' burnt toast, the images inspired by their conversations and the history around tea and toast. These sessions were led by Suffolk-based fine artist Linda Farrow.
My work aims to challenge the established dichotomy of culture vs. nature. By utilising a visual language inspired by historic graphic design styles or my own creations, my prints aim to highlight how nature still influences and underpins our day to day life and how different parts of our culture are intrinsically linked to the landscape that surrounds us.

Sue Thompson
"The nursing profession runs in my family. When my mother arrived in the UK from Jamaica in the 1950's, she had intended to train as a nurse but due to circumstances she never got to fulfil her wish. However she worked for many years as a Auxiliary Nurse for the NHS. My mother encouraged me to become a nurse although my wish was to be an artist. I am also a registered nurse RGN/RMN currently working in a mental health unit. My wish to be an artist has always been there so after working as a nurse for many years I obtained a BA Hons degree in Fine Art in 2014.
My art submission 'Mrs Ebanks' is about my friends mother who worked for many years as a Auxiliary Nurse at St James and Benedict's Hospitals."
Sue Thompson works in oils, acrylics and pastels to create colourful abstract paintings on canvas and board. Her approach to painting can be described as intuitive, creating images by following a feeling or knowing, something that cannot be put into words. The process involves applying layers of paint with a large brush, constantly assessing and adapting to the canvas until the moment of knowing is reached. Her work is characterized by a strong sense of colour, bold brush strokes and layers of contrasting hues
The disciplines of nursing and art can be seen as interconnected. The art of nursing is the intentional creative use of oneself, based upon skill and expertise to transmit emotion and meaning to another. The artist attempts to convey a myriad of emotions and experiences through their creations.
"I was in complete awe of the nurses working around the clock to care for my boyfriend’s father after his sudden heart surgery. As we sat patiently waiting for him to wake up, the nurses were more than happy to explain to us clearly what each machine did, what medicine they were issuing, what they were managing and why. They encouraged us to write down what was happening and how we felt in a book that we could give to David when he had fully recovered, as a way for him to fill in the blanks whilst he was unconscious. It was a painstakingly slow process with both positive and negative news each day and we couldn’t predict the outcome. Through every stage of his recovery we felt acknowledged and welcomed. We never felt we were in the way or had stayed too long. The support provided was appreciated enormously and it made a huge difference to our experience."
Catherine creates paper collages using National Geographic magazines from the 1950s-1980s. Her practice explores changing contexts, providing the characters with a new home and often presenting juxtapositions. She incorporates a variety of textures to build a visually interesting piece with depth using paint and ink. Often her work is a simple combination of text with an image, as with ‘raw’ – the pure and generous act of holding someone close to you, something men are often not comfortable doing with their friends, but that is essential to our wellbeing as humans. It is important to be reminded of the power of unity during difficult times.
Paula De Sousa is a mixed media artist working predominantly in a sgraffito style using acrylic and oil pastels on paper. After graduating from University of Chester in 1997 with a BA Hons in Art with English, Paula began a long career working with vulnerable adults. The issues of vulnerability and marginalisation have become key themes she explores in her art work, informed by both personal and professional experiences. Paula is influenced by outsider art and has a strong belief in the intrinsic creativity of each individual and healing benefits of art making. Paula lives and works in Brighton & Hove, UK.
My practice revolves around how I perceive different landscapes and spaces. I like to identify with them at an emotional level such as a personal experience and interpret it in conceptual manner in my work. I try to identify the character of each place painting intuitively through my experiences and memories, then pick out distinctive qualities that contribute in making character of the place, and emphasise them; Once finished, the painting is left for the viewers to engage, identify and explore making their own connections with the place. The variation of colours in my work to interpret the moods and ambience of each place. I believe in creating paintings that will emit positive emotions, energy and vibes to the viewer or the space that it is displayed. At an age where art is used for political conversations and topics, I believe it is just as important to give out mindful and meaningful messages as means of rediscovering the humanity and the beauty of little things around us.

My work ranges from acrylic and oil paintings on canvas to more experimental work using handmade paper from different parts of Asia.

I am a self-taught artist and has developed my work as a mindful practice. I don’t not believe in replicating work just for commercial purposes, therefore each piece is unique and personal. If I am given this opportunity I would like to explore themes of “mindfulness” “positivity” with regards to mental health using visual arts to create a dialog with the community
"I am extremely proud of our nurses and healthcare staff especially at the moment.
I work alongside nurses in my work and witness the care and dedication in the best of times.
They have really come into their own at this time and hopefully there will be a huge reevaluation of how vitally important they are and we can honour them appropriately going forwards."
I am an art therapist and collage artist and have been exhibiting in group shows all over the U.K since 2013.
My work celebrates women in the world placing them as the central subject caught up in a variety of situations and guises, rarely meeting our gaze.
The work is largely humorous, sometimes cheeky and positions women engaged in reverie and play alongside each other or in their own space, autonomous and self possessed.
I’m an artist and educator living and working in York. I work mainly in acrylics and take my inspiration from light and it’s effect, the narrative within an image and more recently looking at Dementia, seen from a loved ones perspective. Trying to capture the battle between the changes and our memories through portraiture.
"In quiet moments I think about the bravery and selflessness of Nurses and carers during the outbreak of Covid-19. To wake-up in the morning and go into a situation where you put your life at risk to safe other peoples lives is courages and heroic. I am full of admiration and gratitude for our health carers. Thank you!"
"South African born and now living in the United Kingdom, Marius Els is a master in creating astonishing surrealistic collages or as he calls it “new media art”. Marius Els manufactures images which are telling a whole story and have deeper meaning.' - Tilpy Photography
Marius Els is a London based photo artist and illustrator using photography to express his creativity in a surreal, theatrical way using digital manipulation. Originally from South Africa, he uses his experience and influences from when he was a classical ballet dancer to create imaginative imagery with poignant story telling. Each project consists of research, planned modelling, props and landscape photo shoots from which he gathers chosen images to create the final image. Marius says, ""The whole process of creating these images can be rewarding as a lot of the topics are close to my heart and personal.""
All photographic images used in my art work are my own and created in Adobe Photoshop with creative brushes, textures and elements from the Photoshop Artistry Course, Awake2019 Course, Pixelo, Tom Chalky and brusheezy.com"
"Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing."" - Mother Teresa. This is what a nurse's smile means to their patients. When someone is going through their most difficult time in their life, a nurse's smile can make them feel ten times better. It gives them hope when they need it most, a nurse's smile is the most important thing in the world for their patients."
Chloe Ann Munday is a photographer who is strongly influenced by colour and the natural world. Currently studying a BA in photography, she is still finding her feet in her photography career. Working mainly in still life, macro, outdoor and conceptual photography her work strives to make people think about the impact human beings are having on our planet. Her images are very ascetically pleasing using photography to make people question the effect humans have on the natural world. She wants to use her photography to remind people what we could be missing if we continue to treat the planet as we do.
Sara Jayne Harris is a visual artist living and working in the UK. She has a special interest in figurative representations and investigates themes concerning identity, temporality, pluralism and ritual through her multi media practice. Alongside her figurative sculptural works her practice seeks to animate the inanimate and to conjure a state of presence. In this series of works entitled 'Ingredients', the produce was sourced from her allotment garden. The act of planting and cultivation yielded in this instance a bountiful crop, providing the harvester with some ingredients for a healthy life. Artistically, the crop’s organic shapes and colours provided scope for creating and documenting these anthropomorphic compositions.
I am a multi-disciplinary artist currently using photography, print-making, object making, writing; and historically using performance and video.
I am drawn to creating both beautiful objects and radical disruption.
I create jewellery from gemstones and found objects; wearable aesthetic heirlooms.
However, much of my current exhibition work is women centric and also explores much darker political comment about gender-based violence and misogyny. I create as my awareness evolves within my experiences of seeing, hearing and feelings about living within a toxic patriarchal culture.
"During my life nurses and the medical profession have been a big part of my life, most notable would be my car accident, intensive care and ward staff, but ever since with physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, the neuroscientists I’ve seen, occupational therapy, plastic surgery teams, foot and leg specialties. Though-out I’ve received the best possible care and owe a debt of gratitude I can never repay. Then there’s the Cancer specialists who cared for mum for many years and gave us longer with our mum. The compassion, the extra miles gone to. I am in awe of the system that provides for all."
My journey with art started as a child, going through to my teens with Pottery classes. It consisted less of wheel work but more so free play and within the small group it felt very much like I was adventuring. In 1996 aged twelve I acquired a traumatic brain injury which still impacts me greatly. The focus in recovery was very much learning to use every muscle in my body and communication - initially without speech. I had to learn to solely use my non-dominant hand and arm.

Art was farthest from my mind in my mid twenties when I attended an art group. I needed interaction and to get out of the house. Owing, I believe, to the precision and concentration involved in merely holding a pencil and then marking paper my art quickly progressed and it became ""stylised"" by my difficulty presented from the quickly fatigued control of my hand and arm. For example creating obstacles to drawing solid lines.
I am untrained, and uncertain of what I intend when I start the process but I will find beauty, or gain intrigue with all my muses. An expression, a pose, an aura! I find beauty in life and people fascinate me. Everyone has a beauty and I love it if I can capture an emotion or wonderful thought.
I live in Exeter – pretty close to my place of birth: Taunton in Somerset. But I travelled the long way round – living and studying in Israel, Portsmouth, London, and America along the way. I have made and exhibited art in all those places, as well as holding many exhibitions here in the south west.

I work in a variety of media including painting, mixed-media constructions and ceramics. Since 2015 I have also been exploring collaborative performative practice, as a founding member of Preston Street Union (PSU) – an Exeter-based affiliation of artists who generate new work and learning through social, collaborative processes.
"Who doesn’t love a kind nurse? I am thinking now of childhood friends who grew up to become nurses. One didn’t practice long (she cared for her own children, and died young). One has spent her life as a nurse—so caring and kind. Sweet, she is. She has taken care of many, and has seen death. Still, she maintains her sweetness. And her love of life and laughter. Is that it then? A love of life."
I am a painter, living and working in New York. I use photographs on which I base my paintings. The paintings look a little photographic from a distance.

I have always worked in series—streams of thoughts and desires common to us all, represented by images. I see the images as indicators of the material world.

At first my series were narrative, encompassing quotidian aspects such as romantic love and building construction. And I considered ideas—enlightenment, biology, memory. Now I am thinking about nature and our planet. I want to point to the beauty, portal to the sublime.
Zelga successfully transitioned from Said Business School, University of Oxford to the world of Fine Arts achieving a Masters in Fine Arts in Fine Art (Wimbledon College of Art and Oxford Brookes University). Zelga’s work explores our search for a safe space and the human need for transition.

Surreal composites seek to ask questions of memory, boundary and hope as a means of survival. She uses subject, line, trace and materiality across myriad forms such as decal and glass, interactive scrolls, life size vinyl friezes and most recently through moving image. Zelga works with pastel, charcoal, sand, ink, oil and moving image technology to accompany the viewer through a range of surreal scenarios in an attempt to document the human condition.

Works combines a narrative rich with emotion where boundaries are represented, confines evoked and a sense of life in suspension alluded with ephemeral, transitory, figures present in body yet absent of emotion.

A constantly evolving lexicon of characters is created which when combined allude to a narrative of solitude and personal reflection. The intention is to create a dialogue, pose a question – to have the conversation. Whatever the subject or medium each image and each stroke is individual, yet the sum is far greater than its component parts. Whether in colour or monochrome, images convey an assemblage of meaning beyond the simplicity of the scene.
"In 2008 my son was born with unexpected special medical needs, which led to a 6 year intensive period of many surgeries and hospital stays. We were frequently quarantined due to infection during that time. Although the doctors and consultants would see us for rounds every 24 hours, it was the nurses and carers, pain management team and cleaners that made the fabric of our days most bearable and joyous. Without the care and commitment of the nursing staff, who listened and did their very best during a difficult time, my sanity and my son would have been lost. It was during the long nights, I would walk the halls of the hospital and the brightly coloured art would fill my soul. The art whether by children or artists would remind me of a bright world outside of the hospital and remind me of the beauty and hope present within and beyond it's walls."
Born in Southampton in 1974, Charlotte W. Stubbs is the fourth generation of committed, self-taught female painters. From anthropomorphic cats to vibrant MRI brain scans charlotte brings beauty and vibrant colour to subjects that are often disturbing or uncomfortable. Her love of colour, interest in social justice and current affairs, and the human condition informs much of her subject matter as do her terrifying dreamscapes. Her celebratory use of colour, vividly captures flash points of protest, death, politics and mental health. She lives and works in East London.

Adam Drouet
Adam Drouet's most recent art projects have been a response to his experiences as a health care professional. In 2019 Adam undertook an artist’s residency at a local dementia care home, a setting with which he is very familiar. This resulted in a series of drawings and paintings focusing on both the residents and carers – two groups who are out of the public gaze and often overlooked, as has been highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic. He depicts the interactions between them, capturing the constant small, tender acts of loving care which he witnessed.

A previous large collaged work, combining text, images and artifacts, was inspired by the memories of the people and places visited on domiciliary visits in Truro over the last twelve years. This piece reflects on how we affect, and are in turn affected, by all of our clients, becoming the custodians of their stories and the memory of their human spirit; it is a work which resonates powerfully with fellow health and care workers.
Adam graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Falmouth University in 2009, and combines artistic practice with his work as a podiatrist, a job he has done in many settings since 1987. His main interest is figurative drawing and oil painting, particularly portrait, the figure and still life. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Cornwall and London.
Amanda Van Der Zant
During the past six years our family has been cared for by the health workers of two of our major hospitals in Brisbane. Princess Alexandra Hospital (Woolloongabba) and the Mater Hospital Brisbane (South Brisbane). My husband contracted a blood infection 6 years ago and was cared for in the PA Infectious disease ward for 3 weeks, while my father-in-law was treated at the Mater for about 6 years for Leukaemia sadly passing away in 2018. My Mother-in-law received treatment for breast cancer at the Mater during this time as well. The support and care our family members received was amazing. While medicine and treatments can ease the pain and suffering it is the dedication and hard work of the health workers who made the difference for our family. The current Covid19 Pandemic is a reminder of how lucky we lay people are because of the health workers and their dedication.
I graduated in February 2019 from Curtin University Perth Australia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Visual Culture after studying part time for five years. As a mature aged student I developed my painting, drawing and printmaking skills during this time. After graduating I have continued my work as an art aide in a Brisbane school whilst continuing my own art practice on weekends and school holidays. I have gained the confidence to pursue my art practice and have entered various art prize competitions in Australia and overseas during 2019 and 2020 with pleasing results.
My experience as an artist is limited but my eagerness to develop my art practice is my aim right now. I still have so much to learn and experience as a practicing artist.
Straddie (2019)
North Stradbroke Island is just off the coast of Queensland. The island has the most amazing beaches of crystal clear water, white sand and near perfect weather all year round. It is no wonder visitors from all over the world come to experience the tranquillity and beautiful seascape of the island. Locals and visitors fondly refer to the island as Straddie (2019) hence the title for my painting.
Swimming in the ocean allows me to regenerate my mind and body. My painting is concerned with my sense of place and being connected to nature through swimming in the ocean. The feeling of mindfulness one can experience when submerged in a body of water are my ‘Ingredients for a Healthy Life'. The calming and soothing effect on the body is nature’s gift to all of us, it’s free.
