"I have been a hospital patient on several occasions and have greatly appreciated the care given to me by the nurses."

CJ Crosland is a photographer based near London. Originally a History & Politics graduate and musician working as a software tester, CJ became hooked on Street Photography in 2010 and is in it for the long haul. CJ is inspired by whatever life brings and seeks to capture the essence of their intense and complex individual experience.
CJ has shown work in group exhibitions in the UK, Belgium, Poland, Italy and Germany.

Family carers in Suffolk (Rachael Murray)

This artwork was created by adult family carers who attend Suffolk Artlink's Around the Table carer groups in Halesworth, Lowestoft and Claydon. The three groups of carers collaborated to create assemblages of 'scraped into' burnt toast, the images inspired by their conversations and the history around tea and toast. These sessions were led by Suffolk-based fine artist Linda Farrow.

"My mum was a nurse. Growing up with her every so often having to work Christmas or New Year, giving up on these key family moments, I admire the sacrifices she and her fellow nurses/carers give to keep us all safe and well."

My work aims to challenge the established dichotomy of culture vs. nature.  By utilising a visual language inspired by historic graphic design styles or my own creations, my prints aim to highlight how nature still influences and underpins our day to day life and how different parts of our culture are intrinsically linked to the landscape that surrounds us.

"The nursing profession runs in my family. When my mother arrived in the UK from Jamaica in the 1950's, she had intended to train as a nurse but due to circumstances she never got to fulfil her wish. However she worked for many years as a Auxiliary Nurse for the NHS.  My mother encouraged me to become a nurse although my wish was to be an artist.  I am also a registered nurse RGN/RMN  currently working in a mental health unit.  My wish to be an artist has always been there so after working as a nurse for many years I obtained a BA Hons degree in Fine Art in 2014.
My art submission  'Mrs Ebanks' is about my friends mother who worked for many years as a Auxiliary Nurse at St James and Benedict's Hospitals."

Sue Thompson works in oils, acrylics and pastels to create colourful abstract paintings on canvas and board. Her approach to painting can be described as intuitive, creating images by following a feeling or knowing, something that cannot be put into words. The process involves applying layers of paint with a large brush, constantly assessing and adapting to the canvas until the moment of knowing is reached. Her work is characterized by a strong sense of colour, bold brush strokes and layers of contrasting hues
The disciplines of nursing and art can be seen as interconnected. The art of nursing is the intentional creative use of oneself, based upon skill and expertise to transmit emotion and meaning to another. The artist attempts to convey a myriad of emotions and experiences through their creations.

"I was in complete awe of the nurses working around the clock to care for my boyfriend’s father after his sudden heart surgery. As we sat patiently waiting for him to wake up, the nurses were more than happy to explain to us clearly what each machine did, what medicine they were issuing, what they were managing and why. They encouraged us to write down what was happening and how we felt in a book that we could give to David when he had fully recovered, as a way for him to fill in the blanks whilst he was unconscious. It was a painstakingly slow process with both positive and negative news each day and we couldn’t predict the outcome. Through every stage of his recovery we felt acknowledged and welcomed. We never felt we were in the way or had stayed too long. The support provided was appreciated enormously and it made a huge difference to our experience."

Catherine creates paper collages using National Geographic magazines from the 1950s-1980s. Her practice explores changing contexts, providing the characters with a new home and often presenting juxtapositions. She incorporates a variety of textures to build a visually interesting piece with depth using paint and ink. Often her work is a simple combination of text with an image, as with ‘raw’ – the pure and generous act of holding someone close to you, something men are often not comfortable doing with their friends, but that is essential to our wellbeing as humans. It is important to be reminded of the power of unity during difficult times.

Paula De Sousa is a mixed media artist working predominantly in a sgraffito style using acrylic and oil pastels on paper. After graduating from University of Chester in 1997 with a BA Hons in Art with English, Paula began a long career working with vulnerable adults. The issues of vulnerability and marginalisation have become key themes she explores in her art work, informed by both personal and professional experiences. Paula is influenced by outsider art and has a strong belief in the intrinsic creativity of each individual and healing benefits of art making. Paula lives and works in Brighton & Hove, UK.

Aasiri Wickremage 

My practice revolves around how I perceive different landscapes and spaces. I like to identify with them at an emotional level such as a personal experience and interpret it in conceptual manner in my work. I try to identify the character of each place painting intuitively through my experiences and memories, then pick out distinctive qualities that contribute in making character of the place, and emphasise them; Once finished, the painting is left for the viewers to engage, identify and explore making their own connections with the place. The variation of colours in my work to interpret the moods and ambience of each place. I believe in creating paintings that will emit positive emotions, energy and vibes to the viewer or the space that it is displayed. At an age where art is used for political conversations and topics, I believe it is just as important to give out mindful and meaningful messages as means of rediscovering the humanity and the beauty of little things around us.

My work ranges from acrylic and oil paintings on canvas to more experimental work using handmade paper from different parts of Asia.

I am a self-taught artist and has developed my work as a mindful practice. I don’t not believe in replicating work just for commercial purposes, therefore each piece is unique and personal. If I am given this opportunity I would like to explore themes of “mindfulness” “positivity” with regards to mental health using visual arts to create a dialog with the community

"I am extremely proud of our nurses and healthcare staff especially at the moment.
I work alongside nurses in my work and witness the care and dedication in the best of times.
They have really come into their own at this time and hopefully there will be a huge reevaluation of how vitally important they are and we can honour them appropriately going forwards."

I am an art therapist and collage artist and have been exhibiting in group shows all over the U.K since 2013.
My work celebrates women in the world placing them as the central subject caught up in a variety of situations and guises, rarely meeting our gaze.
The work is largely humorous, sometimes cheeky and positions women engaged in reverie and play alongside each other or in their own space, autonomous and self possessed.

I’m an artist and educator living and working in York. I work mainly in acrylics and take my inspiration from light and it’s effect, the narrative within an image and more recently looking at Dementia, seen from a loved ones perspective. Trying to capture the battle between the changes and our memories through portraiture.

"South African born and now living in the United Kingdom, Marius Els is a master in creating astonishing surrealistic collages or as he calls it “new media art”. Marius Els manufactures images which are telling a whole story and have deeper meaning.' - Tilpy Photography
Marius Els is a London based photo artist and illustrator using photography to express his creativity in a surreal, theatrical way using digital manipulation. Originally from South Africa, he uses his experience and influences from when he was a classical ballet dancer to create imaginative imagery with poignant story telling.  Each project consists of research, planned modelling, props and landscape photo shoots from which he gathers chosen images to create the final image. Marius says, ""The whole process of creating these images can be rewarding as a lot of the topics are close to my heart and personal.""

When someone is going through their most difficult time in their life, a nurse's smile can make them feel ten times better. It gives them hope when they need it most, a nurse's smile is the most important thing in the world for their patients."

Chloe Ann Munday is a photographer who is strongly influenced by colour and the natural world. Currently studying a BA in photography, she is still finding her feet in her photography career. Working mainly in still life, macro, outdoor and conceptual photography her work strives to make people think about the impact human beings are having on our planet. Her images are very ascetically pleasing using photography to make people question the effect humans have on the natural world. She wants to use her photography to remind people what we could be missing if we continue to treat the planet as we do.
