Welcome to the Art of Caring 2020. Today we introduce the work of 4 artists who have contributed work to this year's exhibition.... Helen Grundy, Daniele Bongiovanni, Jade Atkinson and Laura Atkinson. The Art of Caring is an annual inclusive international art exhibition celebrating Nurses, Midwives, Carers, and the NHS. "Three years ago I was being treated for metatastic thyroid cancer, I will never forget the kindness and compassion of the nurses who helped me through the first few days after major surgery. I will always be grateful to them."

 I am a contemporary fine artist based in Birmingham, UK. I am an object maker, a creator of digital and paper collages and I also make coloured pencil drawings. I graduated from The Birmingham School of Fine Art in 2004 and since then have been exhibiting both nationally and internationally.  My practice is driven by my desire to work with unusual materials and to create works that are surreal, provocative and humourous. I am fascinated by the phenomenon of nostalgia and its bittersweet effect on our senses. I feel that each artwork I make is a souvenir from my life. I am currently exploring new directions with collage and trying to incorporate new materials, new processes and want to try and invent a new art form.

Gerrard Lindley, Hannah Lehane and Jina Wallwork - Art of Caring 2020

Welcome to the Art of Caring 2020. Today we introduce the work of 3 artists who have contributed work to this year's exhibition.... Gerrard Lindley, Hannah Lehane and Jina Wallwork.
The Art of Caring is an annual inclusive international art exhibition celebrating Nurses, Midwives, Carers, and the NHS. Thank you to the School of Nursing at Kingston University for their support.

Gerrard Lindley

"I also work as a support worker to someone with learning disabilities (an occupation I've been involved with for 25 years ), so I've seen first hand for a long time the dedication, support, empathy, and understanding care workers bring  to their job."

Gerrard Lindley is a freelance artist / illustrator, living and working from an open studio in North Devon. He worked in the publishing, print, advertising, and greetings card industry for many years, but now  focusses mainly on fine art. He uses reclaimed material and collage in much of his work, drawing inspiration from music, performance, pop art and abstract expressionism. He is also a p/t musician playing harmonica with THE JUKES, a band from north devon playing a mix of rhythm n blues, rockabilly, and rock n roll roots.

Jina Wallwork

Jina Wallwork is an artist living in Great Britain. All of the artforms that she uses are a part of her voice. For Jina, art is a means of communication. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally and it can be found in various public collections including the MoMA and the Smithsonian. Sometimes Jina speaks with images and at other times she expresses herself through words and music.

Art of Caring Online Exhibition - May 2020

Welcome to the Art of Caring 2020 exhibition. This is our 6th year of inclusive international art that celebrates Nurses, Midwives, Carers, and the NHS. Due to the lockdown situation here in the UK we will be showing a selection of artwork online this May (instead of in St George's Hospital, Tooting). Since submissions opened we've had a fabulous response from the art community with 300 artworks from 125 artists. Every day in May we will publish the work of 4 artists here on the Art of Caring blog.
We hope you enjoy the exhibition.

We are delighted to participate in the Art of Caring 2020 exhibition, the year which the World Health Organisation designated as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife and the bicentennial year of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Any year would have been timely to celebrate the attributes of our highly skilled, multi faceted professions, which make up the largest proportion of the NHS workforce. But with the world facing a global pandemic, it is apposite that in this, of all years, we pay tribute to the contribution and sacrifice made by our colleagues worldwide and offer them our sincere thanks and gratitude.

The theme for this year’s exhibition, ‘Ingredients for a healthy life’ takes on new meaning and poignancy in such unprecedented times. Many images in our exhibition reflect this, appreciating the gifts of comfort and kindness which bind us together. We are indebted to our Artist In Residence, Alban Low in organising our first ever ‘Virtual’ exhibition and hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

Art of Caring online exhibition in May 2020

Dear artists,
We hope you are all safe and well wherever you are in the world today.
Thank you for submitting your artwork to the Art of Caring exhibition, and supporting Nurses and Carers through your creative endeavours.
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic St George's Hospital have asked us to postpone the postcard exhibition. They are very keen and supportive of the exhibition and have asked us to put it up at the earliest opportunity once the current crisis is over.
The postcards are currently being printed so we are ready for when this happens.
The staff at the School of Nursing at Kingston University are currently choosing the poster image for the exhibition. They pass on their thanks to you all.
The curatorial team at St Pancras Hospital are delighted with your contributions too. They will make a decision about the second Art of Caring exhibition when things become a little clearer. Thank you to everyone who filled out the form for this exhibition.

To help support the incredible work our Nurses and Carers are doing at this difficult time we will be running an online exhibition during May 2020.
Each day during May we will be featuring the work of 4 artists on our blog/website. www.artofcaring.org.uk
Don't forget it is International Nurses Day on the 12th May 2020.
Alban, Bryan, Dean and the St George's Hospital staff will choose one artwork per person.
The scheduled date of when your artwork will be shown online is below.

To accompany your image there will be a short biography about you, a link to your website (if you have one) and a statement or quote that is personal to you. This statement/quote might be something about how Nurses or Carers have helped you or your family during your life, or it might reflect what is currently happening during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Art of Caring 2020 - Update

During the next few days we will be contacting artists about our plans for the Art of Caring exhibition 2020. Please be patient with us and keep an eye out for an email.

It looks like we will be running an online exhibition during May to help support International Nurses Day on the 12th May. We will be featuring different artists and their artwork each day on our website/blogs/facebook etc. St George's Hospital are very keen to exhibit the physical postcard show so we are going to prepare this as we normally do. When the hospital is open to visitors once again we will be placing the artwork on the walls.

Submissions Open 2020 - Art of Caring

Now in its 6th year, the Art of Caring is needed more than ever to show support for Nurses, Midwives, Carers, and the NHS. We are looking for artwork that demonstrates your passion for Care and/or Caring. Your artwork will be exhibited as part of a worldwide celebration of the World Health Organisation designating 2020 as the 'Year of the Nurse and Midwife.'

Our theme for entries this year is 'Ingredients for a Healthy Life'.

The Art of Caring will be exhibited twice.

First, at St Georges Hospital (May 2020) where printed postcards of your artwork will be displayed on the walls of the hospital to help celebrate International Nurses Day. This is an inclusive exhibition. 

Second, at St Pancras Hospital (July-Oct 2020) which will show original artworks and printed postcards. Works will be selected by the Arts Project curators, Peter Herbert and Marius Els.

There is no entry fee.

To enter send up to 3 jpeg images at an A6 size to collectconnect4@gmail.com by 12th April 2020

You will receive a confirmation email within 7 days with your catalogue/exhibition numbers. Before the exhibition, we will print 2 postcards of each of your artworks. One copy will be sent to you and the other will be exhibited at St Georges Hospital, Tooting, UK in May 2020.

Deadline for entries is 12th April 2020

(We may close early if all 400 exhibition spaces are filled)

Art of Caring Closing Night Party and Film

Last Friday we closed The Art of Caring exhibition with a new film from the talented Anna Bowman. She interviewed several artists from the exhibition and reveals the stories behind their work.

Meet Peter Herbert and Alban Low, the exhibition curators and five of the artists showing in this wonderful annual group show focusing on the theme Health for All. The exhibition began in May with a display of postcards of work by artists and nurses at St George's Hospital curated by Alban Low and supported by the hospital and Kingston University. It then moved to the Gallery, St Pancras Hospital where Alban and Peter Herbert curated an exhibition of artwork by 38 artists. We meet artists Grace Currie, Sue Challis, Sybil Adelaja, Ines Elsa Dalal and Jane Allison and see some of their work as well as work by other artists in the exhibition.  

We are very grateful for all the support from the hardworking curatorial team at The Arts Project, including Peter Herbert, Elaine Harper-Gay and Simon Richardson. We will be opening submissions for the sixth year of the Art of Caring in January 2020, so please check out the website then.
